National Conference- students will be allotted up to $1,500 to attend a national or international to present at a conference. Funds can be used to cover airfare, hotel, meals, or transportation.

The project’s strategic student-success efforts address well-documented barriers, e.g., feeling of isolation, lack of support structures, deficit thinking, and negative departmental climate. AIALA will serve as a critical incubator for the development of culturally responsive models to serve and support Hispanic graduate students in AI and ALA.

Mentoring will engage all participants in AIALA, as a mechanism to share experiences, get professional guidance, and reduce tension. This is particularly important for the success of students from traditionally underrepresented groups.

The AIALA program will provide pre-mentoring workshops and orientation sessions to potential mentors, explaining the importance of authentic communication, openness, active listening and other mentoring skills. Affording AIALA scholars opportunities to connect with faculty from underrepresented groups as mentors and role models is a core dimension of inclusive science, enabling scholars to develop their identities as scientists. Through the collaboration with CAHSI, we have opportunities for Hispanic scholars to connect with Hispanic professionals, faculty, and students across the U.S. This will complement research experiences and conference attendance, that can provide important socialization experiences toward graduate school for Hispanic and other students of color.
